ORIGIn of tadelakt

Tadelakt's roots trace back to the ancient city of Marrakech in Morocco. This exquisite lime plaster was traditionally used in the construction of hammams (traditional steam baths), palaces, and riads (Moroccan houses with an interior garden or courtyard). The word "Tadelakt" itself means "to rub in" in Arabic, reflecting the unique application and polishing process that defines this material. Historically, Tadelakt was prized for its waterproof qualities, making it an ideal choice for bathrooms and other wet areas.

Tadelakt Application PROCESS

Tadelakt begins with a key ingredient: limestone. Specifically, this limestone is sourced from deposits found in the Marrakech region, where it has been quarried and processed for centuries.

The limestone is burned in traditional kilns to produce quicklime alongside a fraction of unburnt lime and other aggregates. There are no additional sand or additives to be added. It is a ready-to-use material on its own.

Owing to the traditional method it is made, Tadelakt has no added resins as compared to modern materials. It needs to be worked the traditional way, floating by wooden floats  and compacting by polished river stones.

Being a 100% natural material, Tadelakt is reactive to traditional soaps. Applying soap to Tadelakt, seals and waterproofs it.

P.S Tadelakt is a green material as the CO2 produced during the calcination process is reabsorbed and it reverts to being the original limestone.
